I read this whole story fully expecting Harry to die. Your imagination is astounding, and I cannot even begin to describe the emotions that I had when reading this.
Phew- very very happy that Harry is alive.

Oh - but I could never kill Harry - I solemnly swear!

Your imagination is astounding,

Hee, well, I don't know about that, but it's very kind of you to say! :D

Thank you for reading!

That was so lovely! Ron was brilliant in this. Bravo!

Thank you so much for reading and commenting! I'm glad you like teh Ron. :)

I WAS SO FREAKIN' SCARED!

But you didn't kill him, and I didn't have to cry my eyes out like I was gearing up to do.

Brilliant!

*trots off to read more of your fics*

I'm so sorry! I know it was scary there for a bit. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to 'sell it', I was very nervous about this one. Thank you!

Oh - I'd be thrilled to hear your comments on other fics. :D

Oh, my, this is just fabulous! I really enjoyed Ron and Harry's reparte...so comfortable, so real. You truly, really get these two! Inspired storytelling with the Malusemia and the tie-in with Harry's family. Excellent conversations between them in the cottage, and good Godric, I was losing it there for a moment...and Ron's last second ritual...perfect!

Loved it, from first word to last...absolutely brilliant work, luv!

Thank you so much!

You truly, really get these two!
That is the kindest thing anyone could ever say to me! Their friendship has always been my favorite thing in the whole series, which is why it was so easy for me to ship them once it occurred to me.

Did I get you? Heh, I don't do a lot of angsty stuff - not like you do - so I have to really dig for it when I do. :)

I've been waiting for such a long time to write something that deals with James' parents fortune and how they died. It was nice to finally get that 'done'.

I really appreciate your comments, sweetie! Especially while you are out of town!

This was amazing. Great characterization, fantastic plot and and an all around great story. You managed to capture Ron and Harry's complicated relationship so well. A lot of readers don't understand why they are friends or why Ron is even important to the novels. You just...wow, this is going in my memories. One of my favorites. Great job!
10th-Mar-2007 08:07 pm (UTC)
What lovely things to say, that's very kind of you!

I know there are Ron haters out there but I just don't understand that. *boggles*

A lot of readers don't understand why they are friends or why Ron is even important to the novels.

You think there are a lot of people who think that, really? I guess I'm just surrounded by hundreds of Ron lovers, so that blows my mind altogether. Harry and Ron's friendship is my favorite thing in the whole series. Ron is Harry's first friend, ever. He was willing to fight Malfoy for him within minutes of meeting him. He'd do anything for his Harry, no matter how scary or humiliating. Harry is the first person who liked Ron for himself, his brother's shadows and lack of money not withstanding. Oh - I could go on and on those boys.

But - thank you very much for reading this. It was really difficult to write, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

Oh - thanks for coming over to read it!

I'm glad you noted that tiny Ron-Arthur moment. :D

Wow.

Um... you made me cry. A lot.

With the whole "I'm right here", I just broke.

Harry/Ron!!!

Oh goodness, I'm sorry. I usually go for fluffy/silly, so I never quite know my territory with angst.

Thank you for reading it and taking the time to leave comments!

Excellent Story! I kept chanting to myself while I read "she won't kill Harry, the prophecy...she won't kill Harry, the prophecy" but the fact that I HAD to keep reminding myself is a testament to how wonderful your story is. I believed there that you were really going to do it! How relieved was I when Ron's blood brother's thingy worked! And thier heart to heart conversations...more showing of how close those two are rather than telling us. I loved it.

Again, brilliant story! Mucho Kudos!
10th-Mar-2007 10:12 pm (UTC)
"she won't kill Harry,

LOL - it's true. If you really knew me you'd know I could never really kill Harry. He will live forever in my heart.
I write a lot of Harry/Ron slash where I get to write them in love, but I really wanted to explore their friendship-brotherly-love in this, so I went for a near-dear experience to bring it out.

more showing of how close those two are rather than telling us

That's a really neat way to say that. I'll have to think about that. Thank you very much!

*sobs*

This story is amazing. You've really captured the wonderful aspects of Ron's character and the dialogue is great. The pace flowed really very well and the plot was intriguing to say the least. You've shown the strength the two characters have individually and how they compliment each other perfectly when they're together.
Great work, well done!
10th-Mar-2007 10:18 pm (UTC)
I'm not used to seeing *sobs* in comments for my fics! Hee.

I really appreciate you reading and commenting. You don't know how many times I almost decided to give up on this and just write something silly and fluffy. I'm blown away by the response.

You've shown the strength the two characters have individually and how they compliment each other perfectly when they're together.

Cool! I wasn't thinking quite in terms like that but I do love these two boys so much, I'm glad I conveyed that. :D

Dearest, sweetest maple_mahogany. I was reaching for Kleenex reading this one.

Applause!!!!

I love the bestmates interplay between Harry and Ron. You've got the dialogue perfectly! This is how bestmates treat each other. It sounds EXACTLY like them!

Your invention of Malusemia is a brilliant plot device.

“But,” Ron turned to his father. “I can’t do this, Dad. I don’t - I can’t - I’m not enough.”

“You’ve always been enough for Harry, son.”

Oh Maple...

“Why aren’t you looking at me? … Ron?” Harry reached to grab the hem of Ron’s robe as he passed, but it fell from his weak grasp.

“Don’t ignore me. I trust you to be straight with me when nobody else will.”

Ron...Harry...

“But this is the only thing my pathetic life’s been meant for. I got my parents killed and ruined their friend’s lives-”

“You didn’t do that!”

“-I lived with the Dursleys who hated me. People tried to kill me at school.” Harry’s voice rose as he sat forward. Ron could see he was on the verge of becoming unhinged. “And the one and only thing I have to do to make amends to the universe for ever being fucking born I can’t do now because of a disease that my own dead relatives gave me?”

Damn it Harry.

Harry froze for a moment, trying to hold his breath and swallow a sob. He tried to shake Ron’s hand off his shoulder, but Ron’s grip only tightened, and a stubborn hiccough betrayed Harry’s effort and more tears escaped after it. Finally he reached his hand up and grasped onto Ron’s wrist.

“It’s …” Ron began to say lamely. Well it really wasn’t ‘okay’ at all, so he settled for what he could. “I’m here, mate. You’re not alone.”

This moment did me in...completely.

“Looks like I could use some help before I go and piss myself here.”
This is quite significant. A guy would only let his bestmate help him with something so personal.

“Yeah, guess it is kinda weird. Nothing is ever easy for us though, is it?”
What an understatement there Ron.

Harry smiled and took another proffered bite, but their eyes met, and they looked down sheepishly. Ron didn’t mind feeding Harry but knowing he was uncomfortable made it awkward.
Like helping with Harry's pissing, this proves Harry's trust in Ron is absolute. They are as close as two straight guys could possibly be.

“You were never a fuck-up, Ron. You were always there, and I’ve never forgotten.”
He needs to hear this Harry. Especially from you.

I could go on quoting dialogue. Like ALL of it. I know this is GenFic, but you make it quite apparent that they do love each other, platonically, completely and utterly.

The "death" scene did me in. I was so overwhelmed when I read this I had to come back later to write this review.

The blood brothers concept is fecking brilliant. Beyond brilliant.

You are a GREAT writer. Your imagination rich. Your understanding of our guys is deep. Your ability to get these things onto the the page is utterly fantastic. Please let me know when you get this posted to your own site so I can add this to my Rec List.

Patronus! Look at you - wow - WOW. Thanks!

*grinning like an idiot*
Of course you're a big, soft, sap, too!

“Looks like I could use some help before I go and piss myself here.”
This is quite significant. A guy would only let his bestmate help him with something so personal.

Oh, you don't know how difficult it was to keep from slashing this! Ron so needed to strip him and bath him and hold him and stroke his hair. ;P It was all I could do to see if I could remember how to write them straight again.

I know this is GenFic, but you make it quite apparent that they do love each other, platonically, completely and utterly.
This is exactly what I wanted to do! Their friendship is my favorite part of the Potterverse.

I'm kind of choking on being overwhelmed now. :) Thank you for that. I almost threw the towel in several times on this because it was so difficult for me, so I'm really taken aback. But I really, really appreciate that! *hugs*

WOW
*dies*

*revives*

I LOVE IT SO MUCH YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!
11th-Mar-2007 12:14 am (UTC)
LOL - oh gosh - well I'm very glad you like it then. Thank you! :D
11th-Mar-2007 04:40 am (UTC)
You had me a weeping mess near the end there, before the break. Even though I was sure Harry wasn’t going to die. Very well done.
11th-Mar-2007 03:52 pm (UTC)
Thank you for that! I'm not used to going for the angst, so I really wasn't sure about it.

And you're right, my Harry's will always live. :D

11th-Mar-2007 06:14 pm (UTC)
Oh, I loved this. And I was nearly crying at the point where Ron fell asleep holding Harry's hand. I wasn't sure whether there was any hope in that, but I held out hope no matter what. And I *did* burst into tears when he saw Harry's green eyes again. Really well done.
12th-Mar-2007 01:34 am (UTC)
Wow - thank you so much! I wasn't sure if I could remember how to write straight Harry and Ron. Ron so wanted to bathe him and hold him and stroke his hair. ;P

You are the first person to mention the green eyes bit, cause they had faded away earlier.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting! :D
12th-Mar-2007 04:46 pm (UTC)
“Of all my brothers, Harry; you’re the one. The only one I chose to be my brother. Do you understand that?”

*dies* I love that line. All of the dialog was great, and I love the plot.

Although, at first I didn't realize this was a gen fic, and when I got to the part about Ron thinking about having sex with Hermione, I was like "what? He's not going to have one last shag with Harry before he dies???" So, ok I was a little disappointed, but this is a lovely friend fic : )
13th-Mar-2007 01:40 am (UTC)
Thank you for that. I really appreciate it!

Your comments made me LOL. I *tried* to make these boys just mates, just friends, but yes, the shipper in me kept getting in the way. :D It was sooo difficult not to write them shagging each other. Hee.
12th-Mar-2007 07:32 pm (UTC)
Omg, this was heart-wrenching! This sort of scenario – well, when it's written this well – always has the power to tear me up like nobody's business. I loved Ron so much here – first the mad Gryffindorish risk-taking, and then his despair at being locked up with a dying best friend, and so helpless to do anything. Their interaction in the safehouse was a wonderful mix of tenderness, avoidance and, well, boys being boys :).

And Harry was great as well, from his somewhat battle-hardened post-HBP self to breaking down and crying when he realises what's going to happen – and still so brave to comfort Ron along with the other way round... beautiful.

I was so relieved that Harry made it at the end, almost by accident, just because it saved my nerves more wrenching, not because the other way wouldn't have been as convincing. I wondered whether if it was that easy, a magical blood exchange wouldn't have been known as a cure, but then considering the danger of the illness you describe (great use of JKR's quote here, too!), perhaps it *is* known and just too risky for both, and our pair was just incredibly lucky...

Either way, it was a great fic, and an emotionally intense read – thanks so much for writing!

Thank you so much for reading it and taking the time comment!

I'm glad you took note of the risk taking, not many people have mentioned the 'action' in the beginning, I suppose it gets forgotten after all the stuff at the end, but that was a treat to hear you mention it, thanks.

They are such sarcastic, snarky boys in canon, I just love them and their friendship so much!

Thanks for noticing that Harry was taking care of Ron too. Harry loves him so much.

I have been dying to have a chance to write something about a wizarding disease and cures etc. ever since I first heard that interview. The idea has always stuck with me.

Yeah, the healing was by accident there, it was the act of kinship that was all Ron was thinking about.

Thank you so much for your comments!
